The Asia Professional Speakers Convention is the premier event for professional speakers in Asia and beyond

Start Keynote Tom Sligting

Start: improv Singapore

wow, what a great day this is… and look at you…
it’s a great room.  There must be 75 million dollars of professional speakers here…

>> p1:  AND YOU

Why I choose you?   its because I looked into your eyes…

they are open, friendly, positive, confident… I knew you could take a joke

so, that is an important lesson..  if you start an improvisation..  always first look into the eyes…

>>>p2  never start an improvisation with somebody:  who looks negative and closed.
NO…not you..  in general…..
LETS START…

Theater vs Professional Speaker

the coming half hour…  we are going to have some fun and learn something.
About humor… funny strong openings and strong closings…
I am an artist and a speaker,
And I love theater. So what can we learn from the theater?
The theater started thousands of years ago
but nothing much has changed

## THEATER VS PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER
it’s all about making contact with the public.
telling a story, make ’em laugh.
and getting in touch with your audience.

when we look at professional speaking..  …

it’s all about. making contact with the public, telling a story, create a laugh and

to learn something…..  by… getting in touch with your audience.

Theatrical quoates

let’s have a quick look AT  three beautiful Theatrical quotes….

Energy of Michel Jenneke

If we want to make the difference..  there is something we need for this process…     that’s energy…

let’s talk about energy…    energy is my middle name…
and let’s make it clear.. energy is not about bouncing on stage….  Not about talking fast and loud…

It is about… that you love.. what you are doing.. and you willing to give it all to make it a success…
That starts with a warming up…
Let me give you an example of a great warming up…

Strong opening

let’s start with a strong opening.  There is no blueprint …

you have to create your own opening.  Something that suits you.
Never start out with your first slide….
Never start out with an important message…
Say something about the building Or the event…

or how hard it was to park your car…  or…..

Create synergy

Funny opening

I had to speak at this safety congress…  after dinner…
I started with /// I received a call… if I wanted to speak at the safety congress…
So I said..   if you have 427 glass bowls hanging from the ceiling….. with a light in it.

I will be there.
They see the lights…  they laugh..  and you can start your speech…
This is one way to do it…
Be creative….  Take some risk..  create your own .. funny opening that suits you…

A sentence is just a sentence…

it is the way we deliver it… that makes it becomes a message.

what do I mean with that..?

a lot of speakers …. Not you of course.

love to share allot of content.
but if you want to touch your audience…

to influence them.

it is more about the story you tell them.

If you see this..  if you smell this…

you wonder what it tastes like…

you wonder what the next plate will be.

Great content..    looks good.

same amount of protein

same amount of calories

but it not what we want.

This is the perfect place to have dinner.

great ambiance, a good glass of wine,

that would be brilliant.

But.. if you were served over here…

In a canteen…  That will change the situation…     it won’t taste that good…
let’s be honest.
Is there a speaker here. … who have spoken in a canteen…   ?

What do you think what happens,

if you have to speak in a canteen…    and you are saying.
There are two issues we need to think about
Your audience will think…  yes. I am hungry and I want to outside….
But… if we are … for example in a theater….

And we use the same sentence…

There are two issues we need to think about

People will think….

I wonder what those two things are… please tell me.
And that is what you want as a speaker.

Three kinds of humour in a speech

SPONTANEOUS HUMOR

Spontaneous humor…    it just happens..   somebody says something and people laugh…

something falls on the floor.
the only advise is..  let it happen..   enjoy it..

then take charge again.
prepare yourself with a couple of stock lines…

because anything can happen…

Anything can happen…

Glass…

Try soft lenses next time…
you could say..   if you want to hit me… you got through harder…
then the tension is gone…   you rule the place…

and everybody is feeling great.
Now you can go on..    and you can remember what happened…

for a recall.
Always a lot of power if you recall a spontaneous situation that has happened…

Most importantly, try not to lose control of the situation

other examples

when somebody is drunk:

“I remember when I had my first drink.”

“Never drink on an empty head”

When people keep talking during speech:

“It’s annoying, isn’t it? You start up a really good conversation and someone builds an event around you.”

SCRIPTED REALITY JOKE

Question…
The opening of my keynote..  ..   who thought that was improvisation…?
really?
This was actually a scripted reality joke..     and it looks like an improv opening.
but I knew exactly what I was doing.
I said.. great room…  75 mil. speakers..  and you.
so we had a laugh.. then I pointed to you… as a closed negative person…
that’s funny… because nobody in this room is negative or closed.
I wrote that three weeks ago

Opening Keynote, scripted

CLOSER…  SLIDE
You could make your own opening… and repeat when you feel like it…
It is always good to start with a laugh…

SCRIPTED JOKE

Why are we laughing…?

we are all programmed…  with million’s of facts, assumptions.
well…  a man has millions of facts..  and a woman trillions of assumptions…
let’s combine that.
and a joke is just messing around with your brain… how?

let’s keep it simple.. a basic joke… has two steps..   a set up..  punch.
the setup, one line..   or a couple of lines, is the introduction.
got to be clear..  everybody has to know what you are talking about.
it is like a needle on a record…  rhythm is good, you know the song..  you just follow the story…

then suddenly..   you skipped a groove…

and you hear something that you have never expected.
your brains are working now…   what should I do with this situation…     all in mini seconds…
it will create a sort of positive stress…    then suddenly you understand the.. joke…
and then we laugh to release the  stress ….    that is why you feel happy.

Singer A Do Do

FAMOUS SINGER.

HUNDRED thousand FANS…

OR TWO. WHO ARE REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC

This is just a metaphor

You did not expect that…?

So making people laugh…

is the art of surprising people…
you are actually in their mind and confuse them.

how do we do that..?

let’s make a joke…

Creative process…  not on laptop or pc…   create it on a big paper…

Let’s have a look.   you are good..  normally this takes two hours…

4 million apps… !!!
there is now this app..      called Phone-alarm
if you have a flight at 6 in the morning…
wake up at 3…   always tricky.
now… with the app..    you enter your number…
set 3 a clock…  ready.
the computer does it…
just found out that you can also use another phone number…
finish with hashtag 7…. its seven days a week. that’s a lot of fun…

STRONG CLOSING

I am again using a metaphor..    to make my point
Because of a lot of speakers.    Not you… in general, like to speak..   a lot.
My point is.   Always focus on your goal.

Keeping up the ball?

or hit it once…

Can you be a master in keeping up a ball..    40 times..  170..  600?
Or you can only touch it ones…
In a way that people will remember…

want to see over and over again…
In a way, you can influence them…   being happy.
That should be the objective of a professional speaker

In conclusion,

I gave you a glimpse of the insights of humor
we talked about a strong opening say something about the room, the venue…

here and now.
strong closing..   focus on your goal…
